Mindfulness: Your Best Friend When it Comes to Cravings, Binges, and Stress
Let’s start with a simple description of Mindfulness so we’re all on the same page...it's that moment you consciously realize you're doing something you don’t want to be doing…like eating. We all do it and it is simply a habit…but it can be easily changed! Let me share with you a personal story with you about my own experience with mindfulness…I think will help put things in perspective. The other day I was chatting with my fellow Optimal Health Guides and Stephanie started talking about a member of hers who uses "the hair tie mindfulness" practice. What? I’ve never heard of this…I wanted to learn more. When I asked her to tell me more, she said, "Every time you're having an intense craving or in the middle of a binge, take a rubber band or hair tie and move it from [more]
How many times have you decided to start working out…exercising…and then realized you were actually gaining weight? Relax…we have all been there. And some real issues as to why it happens to us…but it doesn’t have to be that way. I’ve been there and experienced it just as you probably have at some point. For me it was when I decided to get back into running. I always enjoyed running and decided I would get started again. I put on a few extra pounds and decided this would be a great way to kill two birds with one stone…I could get in better shape and lose the extra weight. Wrong! I started running 3 – 5 days a week and started gaining weight…some extra body fat around my belly. What! I was running and exercising and now I was actually putting on weight…and in [more]
7 Ways Meal Planning is an Act of Love
People who are healthy for life and perpetually thin have one thing in common…they take time to prepare meals for themselves. Meal planning is an act of love for both yourself and your family. It’s a statement to everyone that you’re health is worth it, and that you’re worth it. As they say, what gets planned gets done and what gets done is what changes us. A study by Cambridge University found that people who cooked at home five times per week or more were 47% more likely to add 10 years to their life. There was a great article by Dr. Mark Hyman, “How Eating at Home Can Save Your Life,” that shares some incredibly strong evidence about fixing and eating your own food rather than food prepared by others. Dr. Mark Hyman says, “Kid’s who have meals from home better in every way, from better [more]
BMI vs. Muscle Mass…which is a better indicator of HEALTH?
The other day one of our members came into our Optimal Resource Center and was quite distraught and confused. She was obviously bothered by something she has just heard from the people at her fitness center. When I asked what the problem was, she said, “I was just told that my BMI was out of whack and that according to their calculator I am borderline obese and need to lose almost 25 pounds. How can that be when I feel healthier than I have been in years on my Optimal Journey?” This is not uncommon…people get misled by BMI readings and calculators all the time. And jumping on the scale is another area people are misled to believe these numbers are the best indicator of health…they aren’t. While both your BMI and a weight scale can be an “indicator” of your current weight situation, they usually don’t ( [more]
A Story of Love, Dedication, and Victories…LIFE…meet Marissa
Marissa’s story is a story about life…our lives. While the specific elements are different for each of us, the story has a common thread that everyone can relate to…challenges. While some are more extreme at different times, we all have them. Watch her captivating video and hear her story. Gaining weight, unhealthy eating, and falling away from a healthy lifestyle is usually a “result” of many of these challenges. Most people become unhealthy and gain weight not because they decided to start eating a quart of ice cream every night for the next year but because of life. Life happened and hit them with challenges that changed their normal. This leads to all kinds of results none of us intended to happen. But they did… Marissa is no exception. Life happened. She gained some weight and stopped eating healthy because she had to deal with these challenges. [more]
Reaching for Optimal Health Every 2 – 3 Hours…
Carrie is someone who has LIVED the story of Optimal Health we talk about with everyone. She has been on the "Journey" and knows both the process and the success that can be found by following a "common sense" program with massive support from our Health Coaches. Her story is not unusual. In fact, it is very common - especially the result of transformation. Most of our members start out by waking up and realizing they are unhealthy and possibly overweight because of it. This is decision time. Do you ignore it or do you do what Carrie did and "build the discipline" to change it. Read her story and you can see how she made the choice to change, and what a rewarding choice she made... "In the beginning… A few years back I was in a state of being big and sassy. I did not think I was [more]
